What is a CFD? (Contract for Difference)

In simple terms, CFD trading is a way to trade on the price movement of an asset (like Gold, Bitcoin, or Stocks) without actually owning it.

How it works:

Instead of buying a physical bar of gold and waiting for the price to go up, you enter into a “contract” with a broker (like Deriv).

  • If you think the price will go up, you open a “Buy” (Long) position.
  • If you think the price will go down, you open a “Sell” (Short) position.

Key Features:

  1. Profit from both directions: You can make money whether the market is rising or falling.
  2. No Ownership: You don’t own the actual asset; you are just speculating on the price.
  3. Leverage: You can trade larger amounts with a small deposit. (But be careful—this also increases risk!)

Summary: You are trading the difference in the price from when you open the trade to when you close it.

A Simple Analogy

Imagine you bet a friend that the price of an Apple will rise by tomorrow.

  • You don’t buy the apple.
  • If the price goes up by $1, your friend pays you $1.
  • If it goes down by $1, you pay your friend $1. That is exactly how a CFD works.

How to Set Up and Use Deriv MT5 (DMT5)

Step 1: Create Your Deriv MT5 Account

Before using the app, you need a specific MT5 account created within Deriv.

  1. Log in to your Deriv.com account.
  2. Go to the Trader’s Hub.
  3. Under the CFDs section, look for Deriv MT5.
  4. Click “Get” (choose between Demo or Real account).
  5. Set your MT5 password (this is different from your main Deriv password).
  6. Note down your Login ID and Server name (e.g., Deriv-Demo or Deriv-Server).

Step 2: Download the MT5 Platform

Choose the version that fits your device:

  • For PC (Windows/Mac): Download the installer from the Deriv website and run the setup.
  • For Mobile (iOS/Android): Search for “MetaTrader 5” in the Apple App Store or Google Play Store and install it.

Step 3: Connect Your Account (Login)

Once the app is open, you need to link it to Deriv.

On Mobile:

  1. Open the MT5 app and tap “New Account” (+).
  2. Search for the broker: “Deriv.com Limited”.
  3. Select the correct Server (Demo or Real).
  4. Enter your Login ID and MT5 password.

Step 4: Start Trading (Basic Usage)

Now that you are logged in, here is how to use it:

  • Quotes: This is where you see the list of assets (Forex, Volatility Indices, etc.). Tap an asset to see its price.
  • Chart: Tap an asset and select “Chart” to see the price movement. You can add indicators here for analysis.
  • New Order: Tap the “+” icon or “Trade” button. Select your Lot size (amount) and click “Buy” or “Sell”.
  • Trade Tab: Here you can see your active trades and your current balance.

Pro Tips for Beginners

  • Practice first: Always start with a Demo Account to learn the interface without risking real money.
  • Check the Server: Many beginners fail to log in because they select the “Real” server for a “Demo” account. Double-check your server name!
